1. Ferdinand von Schirach: Afternoons
After “Coffee and Cigarettes”, the new collection of stories by bestselling author Ferdinand von Schirach has now been published. 26 short stories, some of which only cover a page, deal with encounters, coincidences and decisions that shape a life. The melancholic scenes take place in big cities like Berlin, Zurich, Tokyo or New York and always contain reflections on art and culture. The narrow volume can be read quickly, but the stories in it are not easily forgotten.

2. Theresia Enzensberger: At sea
17-year-old Yada grew up on a floating city in the Baltic Sea. Her father, a tech visionary, built the self-sufficient Seestadt many years ago as an alternative to the rest of civilization – with wind turbines and no internet. But Seestadt has long since lost some of its initial splendor. Algae and moss are spreading across the island, and as Yada discovers, the island nation is even more dilapidated. A clever and captivating dystopia, with which Theresia Enzensberger made it onto the longlist for the German Book Prize.

3. Heinz Strunk: A summer in Niendorf
The successful lawyer Georg Roth goes to Niendorf for a longer break to write a novel. However, there is none of that. This is mainly due to the acquaintance with the liquor dealer Mr. Breda and his girlfriend Simone, who encourage Roth to drink so often that his writing discipline dwindles. Roth decides to stay in Niendorf. The falls of the protagonist and the social decline Strunk as usual with bizarre scenes and a sense of the tragicomic, which earned him a nomination for the German Book Prize for the second time in a row.

4. Fatma Aydemir: Jinns
Hüseyin wrote in Germany for thirty years to provide for his family and to fulfill his dream of owning a flat in Istanbul. But when the day of moving in finally arrived, Hüseyin died of a heart attack. His family from Germany is traveling to the funeral. Each of the six chapters is dedicated to an individual who carries all their own desires and secrets with them. A captivating family novel and a multi-layered depiction of the German-Turkish reality of life in the 1990s. The novel is among the six finalists for the German Book Prize 2022.
5. Isabel Allende: Violeta
Successful author Isabel Allende has already landed in the international bestseller lists with her latest novel. In “Violeta”, the protagonist of the same name tells her grandson about the stages of her life in long letters. She writes about affairs, poverty, terrible losses and deep joy – and about historical events that shaped her life, such as the Spanish flu, the global economic crisis or the women’s rights movement. “Violeta” is the moving story of an impressive woman and at the same time the portrait of a turbulent century that will not only captivate Allende fans.
